Wav Sound Recording:
RealAudio
Before you even start this shit, you must first have recorded a sound wav file that will be encoded to RealAudio... The process of designing Wav's can be different for every computer, so don't email me about it. This list applys only to the Windows 95' version of the encoder but these instructions may be applied to other platforms such as Macintosh..

(Right click then 'Save As' to download and keep on your hard drive)

  • 1:- Go To, http://www.real.com/products/tools/index.html

  • 2:- Go To, 'Audio Encoding Tools'

  • 3:- Go To, 'RealAudio Encoder'

  • 4:- A page will come up asking you for your details, if I was you, I would use a fake name and email address, cuz they would put you on a mailing list and you'll get junk mail, ya know, enter what you want and the questions it ask's, It only has the Encoder for Windows 95'.

  • 5:- The file you download will be about 700kb in file size.

  • 6:- When you have finished installing the encoder, there will be a window split into 2 sides, Source & Destination, the Source is where you choose what wav file you wish to encode, press the 'Browse...' button to choose what file you want. When it opens the wav file, it's sound 'wave' will be drawn in the white box, then you can write the description of the file into the boxes, (that should pretty obvious), the 2 check boxes at the bottom of the left hand side, you should ignore, they won't affect the file much....

  • 7:- The 'Destination' side is a little more complicated. When you selected the wav file to encode, it should have made a name in the destination 'File:' box, you should leave that the same, (it will be the RA file), there are a number of 'Compression' options, they are quite different from each other, all you need to remember is that the less file size, the more shitter the quality of sound, and the more file size, the better the sound quality, 'RealAudio 3.0 - 28.8 Mono, full response' should already be selected, I suggest you use that because it is the best file size/quality mix available for most sites, but if you want shitty sound quality, that will save a lot space (2x), then choose 'RealAudio 2.0 - 14.4', it is the first RA ever available and a lot of people already have the plug-in, but like I said before, the quality is terrible, but you will be able to make more clips for your site. After you have chosen the file quality, all you have to do is press the 'Start Encoding' button to encode the file, it should be pretty quick depending on the size of the Wav.

  • 8:- Now that you've got the RA file done, you have a file which can be uploaded to your website as it is.

  • 9:- You may have a problem with the RA if you upload it raw because your server may bring it up as if it was a webpage with funny characters, I'm not sure what to do about this problem, but it may be better to make the file stream instead, to make a stream RAM file....

  • 10:- A RAM file a basically a shortcut which the RealAudio Player reads and plays an RA file which you uploaded before, to make a RAM file is very simple, if you uploaded an RA file before and say the location of that sound file was http://www.website.com/sound.ra , then all that you have to do is open the standard windows notepad and type in that URL, then save it whatever you want, but it will be a .txt file so you must rename it .ram, then when you upload that, you link it on your page and it will start up the RealAudio player which will stream the RA file, without downloading...

  • 11:-You can save a lot of webspace using RealAudio because the compression is very, very high, somthing like 25:1 for a wav.

  • 12:-If you have any more problems, don't be afraid to ask me any questions. OK.
