Opening Sound Recorder is easy with the Start button, you can get a hint of the location from the picture on the right.., don't forget to make sure that you have completed the last tutorial before going this far.
This is what sound recorder looks like when it is opened. It is a lot simpler than Cool Edit.
When you record a Wav file, you must first choose the quality of the file, the better the quality, the bigger the file size, if the file is big, then it will take a long time to download, therefore the quality must be suitable depending on the useage. To change the quality, go up to Edit, then 'Audio Properties', as shown on the right.
Once you have opened 'Audio Properties', there is a number of options, for the tutorial, you can ignore most of them, but what we're looking for is 'Preferred Quality' which is in the recording box, Sound Recorder simplifies the recording process by using terms like 'Radio Quality', these terms are actually abreviations for pre-defined sample rates, you'll learn about them in the Cool Edit tutorial. Choose a quality you would like and press OK.
With Sound Recorder opened, you will see a screen similar to the one on the right. Seeing as we have set the computer to record from CD only, we need a CD to record, and a player to play it. Get the CD you want to record (any CD for examples sake), put it in your CD-Rom, Sound Recorder does not play CD's, but it does record them, so to play a CD, we need to run a CD-Playing program alongside sound recorder. In the same place you found Sound Recorder (from the start menu), you should see CD Player, open it and play a track (Sound Recorder should still be open), when the track is playing, switch to Sound Recorder and press the record button, wait for a while then press stop, if everything went correctly, you should now have recorded a sample from the CD.
To save that sample, just go to the file menu and press save.
